Hello Ms. Martha.
I have an 11 year old mare that I am starting on barrels. My issue is that I can’t get her to pick up the correct lead, specifically the left. Her previous owner used her in the pasture to work cattle, and it wasn’t important to him for her to take the correct lead. I doubt there is a physical reason, because I’ve seen her lope on the left lead in the pasture. Earlier this summer she was doing fine, I would have to correct her a couple of times during a ride, but the last couple of rides, I can’t get her to take it at all. It has become extremely frustrating for both of us! My questions are 1) Is there hope for an 11 year old to be reformed/retrained 2) What kind of exercises can I do to get her to use the left lead? Thanks, Raye

Raye,

Thank you so much for your comment. Yes, there is hope for your mare. What I would do here is start troting or loping a large circle then come into a smaller circle tilting the nose to the inside, and really putting my weight to the inside. A horse always picks up the back lead first, so really focus kicking just right behind the girth. With your horse being 11, just have some patients with her. With hard work and determination you both with be winning team!!
